We meet everyday people who live in the area and not just tourists. We have had wonderful experiences that we would not have had otherwise When I remember the house swap experiences, it is often the small adventures and events I recall best. For example, that the children enjoyed themselves in the large corner spa bath in Denmark, that the apartment in Copenhagen was only a stone's throw from a lovely ice cream parlor, how we fished for crabs with the children from a pier on the beach in Copenhagen, how the children became good divers after swimming for hours every day in Spain, how my husband and I could take an evening swim in the pool while the children slept because the apartment was located just 10 meters from the pool, and the experience of eating home-cooked dinner in a backyard in Copenhagen. It's often the little moments we remember, that give the feeling that your life is precious.

Being home exchangers means being a part of a Community based on trust and good will. We have made friends with most of our hosts. We really enjoy ‘living as a local’ in a different country: shopping and cooking as locals do, hanging out in their favorite bars and cafes.

We have done quite a few city exchanges but we also visited a few places which we wouldn’t have done had they not been proposed by other members.

Last Christmas we swapped with a French couple who have a converted beach house on the coast of Cap Ferret. We knew very little about Cap Ferret as a region but were tempted by the idea of being in a small village by the sea. Our hostess is an artist and the house is like a mini-gallery full of artwork and character. The area is authentically French and we hardly ran into other foreign tourists. Both of us grew up and live in cities so being in the wooden house for a week was refreshingly different. Exchanging homes is a bit like adopting your host’s lifestyle sometimes; so for a week we could imagine ourselves being more bohemian and artistic! Of course Cap Ferret itself is a beautiful area and being 30 seconds away from the beach was an added bonus. Our host also lent us her car which was very useful for exploring the area.

We are inspired by all these options to visit such amazing places for free. Our first exchange was to South Africa. Now we just came back from our stay at their beautiful houses in Johannesburg and Mosselbay and I can honestly say we had THE best time ever! We explored Krugerpark, went shark diving and whalewatching in Mosselbay and Hermanus and we even had a great time with our exchange partner’s children, who showed us places we would have never visited if we would have travelled ‘the normal way’. After finishing off our holiday with a hospitality exchange in Cape Town, we got back to our own house, which was cleaner than it has ever been. This exchange was a great experience and I hope to enjoy a lot more of these great holidays in the future!
